- You're seen as one of the key players in the introduction of breakbeat to
the Spanish club scene. How did you discover the sound yourself?
I discovered this sound around 1994, thanks to the good labour of my friend Pepe, and his travels where brings very good music packages to Marcapasos, his records shop, where normally I bought the music. Everything is change, but at that time in Andalucia wasn´t too much shops where buy good electronic music imported and, so often I was travelling to Granada to go that shop, for me was a really pleasure to open one of those packages each month. At the beginning almost all Breaks comes in packages from U.S.A, especially from the West Coast, labels like Zone or Concrete by artists like Dj Icey, Uberzone, Cristal Method, Electroliners….., after starts to come out lots of English Break so, I reinforced my search of that style travelling sometimes to London, looking for artists like the Dast Brothers (Chemical Brothers), Josh Wink and his famous hymn, Rennie Pilgrem and his “Acid”, Hybrid, Dub Tribe, The Propellerheard, Lion Rock and all those big teachers. When I heard that different and fresh style, I was captivated by it, and I started to introduce those rhythms, that till the moment were Techno, Trance and Hardcore style of that époque. I played in almost all the big festivals in Andalucia and my music was listened for a lots of people, this it helps to the expansion of this sound, but I think that the great support was that by these time in Andalucia, the Hardcore and the English influence by the raves helps to people likes a lot the break rhythm funny and lively called Breakbeat and during all this time until today it was and it´s the electronic music style that has more supporters in the South of Spain, a land that has lived and followed intensely that movement, being Andalucia a reference world point for Breakbeat, where practically all the relevant artists has been past in events well known as Break Nation Festival for more than 6.000 people, realized by Natural, one of the biggest producers in Andalucia, where I´m one of the founder.
- I've heard that there's a big divide between northern and southern Spain
when it comes to breakbeats. Is this true?
Yes, absolutely true, since Breakbeat appears in Andalucia the rest of styles were declining gradually and till be a minority in biggest festivals or raves, but now, with a more clear club culture, there are space for almost all the styles in smallest events, discos or clubs where you can listen House, Electro House, Techno and Minimal, basically like in the rest of Spain. Outside Andalucia, Breakbeat it isn't very popular, except in Madrid , Barcelona , Extremadura or Canarias Clubs where I was playing last weekend.
- How did you hook up with Functional?
I was sending a few demos of my productions, I liked this label and I saw in the web site, that they were looking for new talents, and was Biff the first one to answer me interested in my job, since there we started to work together and for me was a big pleasure to known this great person who manage Functional, where I published 7 references and I share a lots of goods festivals, and I use from here and I say thanks for everything. Also I want to say to the new producers that send their demos to labels, and don't leave to do it because they have been refused in some opportunity, or didn't get any answer, cause maybe for one label it isn't what they´re looking for, but for others it's could be perfect, and when you less think, the things became as you dream.
- How would you describe your sound?
I like to base my sets and my productions in Techbreak rhythms with electronic and progressive sounds at the moment, I try to join electronic and Techno with breaks bases, I think that it's the closer bridge of Breakbeat with electronic music and techno. Are more dj´s who mixes that style records in his sets where it never appeared breaks now. You have to know that I also play and I produce House and Electrohouse under Rafa Alcantara´s name.
- What do you make of the UK breakbeat scene?
I see it very well, UK is pioneering and it's progressing more and more, like everywhere. There is lot of quality and very good producers and labels. Great locals and festivals that believe and bet in this style of music. U.K is the biggest reference of Breakbeat and the public is more adult and different than in Spain .
- What are the biggest influences in your music?
I started to play in 1987, even I listened a lot of music before, I never liked the commercial music, because I know from first hand everything about 80´s underground. One day, when I was 12 felt into my hands a cassette with an estrange music that I never heard before but I liked, I listened very often and I had it very well kept, and few years after I discovered that this music that I was listening was Kraftwerk, so it seems that I had it too clear since the beginning. I've got infinity vinyls and collections of Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, New Order, A Split Second, Anne Clark, …. For other side I listened a lots of Techno Pop and everything else in relation with electronic music, also other groups like The Cult or The Sister of Mercy…. I always had interest to discover new music and artists. The music attacks me as much the machines, although I started to produce a long time after for technical or monetary reasons.
Further now I had the influence of the artists that I prefer playing, like Elite Force, Koma & Bones, Hybrid, Adam Freeland, Anthony Rother…to name some of them, and isolated works of less known artists. I like the trend to the 80´s now, the syntes retro electronic sounds and simply melodies, it's the electronic sound in his more pure essence.
- Do you have any plans to release an album?
No, I'm not planning to release an album at the moment, I'm concentrate to release maxis as much for my label (Natural Breaks) as others, and remixes for other artists. Besides of the Break I'm producing House and Electrohouse under Rafa Alcantara´s name and all these things don't leave me time for anything else, although I have it as a project for the future.
- Do you have any plans to tour the UK ?
Yes, I will go to UK to play at the Breaksday tent in the Glade Festival this year. Last year they called me but I couldn't assist. I like very much summer time UK´s festivals and also your public, Glastonbury it's incredible, I had the chance to be there and played last 2003 and I can't explain it with words, any person who likes festivals must to go there at least once in their lives.
A greeting from Spain , I hope to see us soon.
